En el marco del Día Mundial del Ambiente que se celebra el 5 de junio, tener en cuenta la contaminación de cada ciudad es clave para elegir dónde vivir, cuidar la salud y ayudar a reducir nuestras emisiones. En España, hay una lista con las 10 ciudades más contaminadas del país.
España se encuentra en el puesto 95 de los países con mayor contaminación atmosférica. A nivel mundial, no es un mal puesto. Sin embargo, la concentración media de PM2,5 en 2023 en España fue el doble de la recomendada por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS).
Gracias al PM2,5 se puede medir el Índice de Calidad del Aire. Este último permite conocer cuáles son las 10 ciudades con peor calidad del aire en España.
La contaminación atmosférica en España
Los PM2,5 son las partículas suspendidas en el aire que se utilizan para medir la contaminación atmosférica en las ciudades. Se trata de partículas emitidas casi en su totalidad por los vehículos, y que penetran directamente en las vías respiratorias, afectando gravemente la salud.
Además del PM2,5, el ICA (Índice de Calidad del Aire) es el medidor más utilizado para conocer la contaminación en las ciudades. A nivel mundial, IQAir es la plataforma que entrega los datos más certeros y en tiempo real sobre la contaminación atmosférica.
Con un ICA de 41 en todo el país, España clasifica con un riesgo bajo (Bueno) teniendo en cuenta los siguientes parámetros:
- Bueno
- Moderado
- Perjudicial para grupos sensibles
- Perjudicial
- Muy perjudicial
- Peligroso
Sin embargo, ese es el Índice de Calidad del Aire general. A nivel ciudad, hay sitios que están mucho más contaminados que otros. Entre esas ciudades, la peor tiene un ICA de 67 (a junio de 2024), que la ubica en un riesgo moderado.

- San Roque, Andalucía: 67 ICA
- Málaga, Andalucía: 66 ICA
- Ibiza, Comunidad Autónoma de las Islas Baleares: 62 ICA
- Puertollano, Comunidad Autónoma de Castilla-La Mancha: 58 ICA
- Huelva, Andalucía: 56 ICA
- Palma de Mallorca, Comunidad Autónoma de las Islas Baleares: 56 ICA
- Laguna de Duero, Comunidad Autónoma de Castilla y León: 55 ICA
- Candelaria, Comunidad Autónoma de Canarias: 53 ICA
- Oviedo, Principado de Asturias: 53 ICA
- Tarragona, Comunidad Autónoma de Cataluña: 53 ICA
