Un grupo de 5 geocientíficos, dirigidos por Angus Graham, sumados a expertos locales de la ciudad de Lúxor, Egipto, lograron reconstruir la dinámica del río Nilo desde el Holoceno (los últimos 11.500 años) hasta hoy.
El equipo investigó más de 80 núcleos de sedimentos tomados de la región del Valle del Nilo, cerca del actual Lúxor. Principalmente, el objeto de estudio estuvo centrado en sitios de Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO como los templos de Lúxor y Karnak.

Luego de analizar características de los sedimentos como su textura, color y tamaño, encontraron que se ha producido un cambio relativamente abrupto en el paisaje fluvial cerca de Lúxor.
Desde “el rápido cambio de la incisión del valle” hasta una masiva agradación de llanuras aluviales (depósito de sedimentos a lo largo de los ríos y de las costas), los científicos atribuyen los cambios al desarrollo de un hidroclima más seco.
La importancia de los descubrimientos radican en el aporte de nuevas ideas sobre la evolución del valle del Nilo egipcio. Tal como explica Nature, los resultados pueden ayudar a los arqueólogos a reconsiderar cómo el paisaje fluvial ha moldeado los lugares antiguos y la cultura egipcia en la región.
Aún así, no fue el cambio climático antropogénico el que transformó el desarrollo del río Nilo, sino los cambios climáticos y ambientales ocurridos durante los últimos 11.500 años, que han dado forma al paisaje del valle del Nilo egipcio.
