Eugenia Kalnay, una de las científicas argentinas más influyentes de los últimos tiempos, falleció este 14 de agosto. Considerada como “la mejor meteoróloga del mundo”, la experta en climatología dejó aportes fundamentales en el campo de la educación, la comunicación científica y la investigación climática.
Poco después de graduarse en la UBA, Kalnay emigró a EEUU. Allí, fue la primera mujer en doctorarse en meteorología en el Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), tal como cuenta el Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN).

Sin embargo, ese fue solo el inicio de una seguidilla de hitos, premios y aportes al mundo científico. Estas son algunas de las huellas que marcó la “mejor metoróloga del mundo”:
Quién fue Eugenia Kalnay
Desde que se recibió como licenciada en Meteorología en la UBA (1965), Kalnay no dejó de perfeccionarse y aportar conocimientos esenciales en cada organización donde trabajó. Un año después de graduarse, emigró a EEUU pero no completamente por decisión propia: fue por la”Noche de los bastones largos”, que obligó a decenas de científicos e investigadores a abandonar Argentina, tal como cuenta el Senado de la Nación, que reconoció la labor de la científica argentina en 2012.
En EEUU, Eugenia se doctoró en el MIT (siendo la primera mujer en hacerlo) y trabajó en la NASA como jefa de sucursal de NASA Goddard, de 1979 a 1986. Posteriormente, dirigió el Centro de Modelización Medioambiental de la Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica (NOAA) de Estados Unidos.

Durante esos 10 años hubo “mejoras importantes en la habilidad de pronóstico de los modelos NWS”, tal como destaca el Consejo Científico Internacional (ISC). Experta en modelización numérica, Kalnay brindó aportes que dieron forma a las predicciones climáticas actuales, siendo pionera tanto en la ciencia fundamental como en las aplicaciones prácticas de la predicción meteorológica numérica.
Como directora de investigación del NOAA, logró desarrollar técnicas que permiten que un pronóstico para dentro de los 10 días tenga la misma calidad que otro para los dos días siguientes.
A la vez, Kalnay compartió sus invaluables conocimientos a los profesionales en formación en la Universidad de Maryland (UMD), siendo profesora universitaria distinguida en el Departamento de Ciencias Atmosféricas y Oceánicas.

Eugenia Kalnay: los premios que distinguieron a la mejor meteoróloga del mundo
En 2009, Eugenia fue distinguida por la Organización Meteorológica Mundial (OMM) como la “mejor meteoróloga del mundo” por sus contribuciones en el campo de la climatología. Sin embargo, ese fue solo uno de los reconocimientos para los aportes esenciales de Kalnay.
- Doctora Honoris Causa de la Universidad de Buenos Aires en el año 2008.
- Primera Genia Brin Profesora en asimilación de datos de la Universidad de Meryland en el año 2008 en Estados Unidos.
- Medalla de oro de la NASA por el Éxito Científico Excepcional en 1981.
- Medalla de oro del Departamento de Comercio de Estados Unidos en 1993 y 1997 y de plata en 1990 desde la Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica NOAA y el Servicio Meteorológico
Nacional de EEUU. - Premio presidencial de Senior Executive Service en 1996, otorgado por el Gobierno de Estados Unidos por labores sobresalientes.

Además, en sus 81 años de vida, Kalnay publicó más de 130 artículos en revistas con evaluación de expertos sobre asimilación de datos y cambio climático, muchos de los cuales han sido reimpresos y traducidos al chino, coreano y japonés.
Según detalla el ISC, la predicción meteorológica numérica, la asimilación de datos, la previsibilidad y la predicción por conjuntos, la modelización acoplada océano-atmósfera y el cambio climático y la sostenibilidad fueron los campos más desarrollados por Kalnay. En todas estas áreas, generó investigaciones fundamentales que moldearon las formas en las que se pronostica el tiempo en la actualidad.
